Breeders Crown

The BHRC has started a review of a number of issues that have been raised following the recent Breeders Crown meeting. This is still on-going, and a final update will be issued as soon as possible. Our condolences go to all connections of the two horses injured. Findings: We have spoken to a number of trainers who raced horses on the 20th August meeting. They have all reported that the track surface was standard and level, and well maintained throughout the evening. They reported they had no concerns in running their horses on the surface. Breach of Rules K10: K10. Any horse that has qualified for a final may not be withdrawn except on the advice of a vet, and any such case must be immediately reported to the Track Stewards. A fine and/or suspension may be imposed when this requirement is violated, see K11-12. There were six horses that qualified for the final, that were subsequently withdrawn, without approval from the racecourse vet. Trainers were therefore found in breach of Rule K10. The penalty range for this breach is fine and or suspension. On this occasion (due to the situation on the evening) a fine of £100 ONLY was considered the most appropriate outcome. Breach of Rules K11: K11. Unless the withdrawal takes place on the advice of the Veterinary Surgeon no horse properly declared and drawn to start shall be withdrawn or scratched from the race without the permission of the Stewards, in which case a report will be submitted to the BHRC. When this requirement is violated, a fine and/or suspension may be imposed and the horse may be suspended for 14 days. (Amended 2009) There were 4 horses declared on the evening that subsequently withdrew. Upon investigation the Regional Steward has confirmed that he gave permission for the horses to withdraw. No penalty has been issued to the Trainer. However, moving forwards Regional Steward and Stewards should all sanction any withdrawals, which should be recorded in the Stewards Book.

Doc Sowerby

The BHRC are saddened to hear of the passing of former York and Eden Valley Track Steward Doc Sowerby. Doc has a long history with the sport, having been an owner and driver in the late 70s, and spending decades involved in the sport at the Stoneriggs Stud. Doc had until recently been acting as a Track Steward until health issues forced him to cut back. Our thoughts go out to Heidi, Jodie and families

Evelyn Slack

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Evelyn Slack wife of Arthur, mother of Dianne and the late Ken. Evelyn is embedded in the history of harness racing, and was a prolific horsewoman, driver and breeder. It is testament to her character that right to the very end Evelyn could still be found working horses in the arena, and was in attendance at Carlisle Racecourse last week to celebrate Arthur’s horse Detective winning for daughter and trainer Dianne and the extended family. Our heartfelt sympathies go to Arthur, Dianne and family. Funeral arrangements to follow.
